Safety
This is perhaps the most important, yet most often overlooked part of running any business. You need to make sure that your company is a safe work environment for everyone. Not only can an unsafe work environment result in injuries or worse, if you don’t follow the correct procedures then you’re going to be liable. You need to make sure that all employees know all of the correct safety procedures as well as ensuring that all of your equipment is working properly. This means that you need to set aside time and money for things like smoke alarm and exit light testing and pallet racking inspections. Not only that but you also have to ensure that your office is a safe place for people to work and move around.
Content
Far too many business seem to think that content isn’t that important to their business, as though only creative industries need content in order to function properly. But the truth is that content is important no matter what kind of business you’re running. If you’re not offering interesting content that your customers will actually want to engage with, they’re never going to be able to maintain a genuine connection with your company, regardless of the quality of your product. Whether it’s your blog, your website or your social media pages, you should make sure that you’re creating regular, high quality content that is interesting, entertaining and relatable.
Bookkeeping
There’s a pretty simple reason why so many small businesses tend to hide their head in the sand when it comes to their accounting. Actually, there are two reasons: A) it’s complicated and can often be difficult to understand. B) It’s boring! Now, there isn’t really much that can be done about point B, but when it comes to point A, there are actually plenty of solutions. For one thing, there are now dozens of different pieces of accounting software available that will make the entire process far simpler and less complicated. But if you still find yourself scratching your head at spreadsheets then you can always just hire an accountant to take care of it for you.
There’s no doubt that trying to pay attention to every single aspect of your business is a serious challenge. However, if you’re not able to balance your time and attention between all of the things that go into your business, you could easily run into trouble.
