Success Tips: Use a Goal Board to create the Motivation for Success

Here’s why a Goal Board is a powerful motivation hack to achieve your and dreams.

Will your dreams just stay as dreams, or are you going to make them happen? We’re all busy… that’s what we tell ourselves. So we stay on our hum-drum track. It needn’t be this way. We need to muster our motivation to break out, cast aside the negative thoughts and ‘talking ourselves out of it’, and achieve what we are only dreaming of.

This is where a Goal Board rocks.

Sometimes called a Vision Board, this is a hack to ensure we are constantly reminded about our goals. It’s simple: a Goal Board is what it sounds like – a board. It could be made of cardboard, paper, plywood – don’t matter. On this board is glued, taped or tacked visual imagery of your goals. Cut out pictures from magazines, newspapers, take your own photos, or download them from the web and print them out. Go wild!

Most importantly, your Goal Board must be in a prominent location, so it is in your face as much as possible. If it’s out of view, it ain’t going to work. Hang above your TV, or in front of your TV if that’s what it takes.

What are you going to put on your Goal Board? This could be a picture of a palm-tree on a golden beach, or an apartment on Park Avenue – they’re images of your dreams, and whatever inspires you to achieve them. Use pictures as much as possible, but words are also fine – just no sentences. The visual element is what creates the effect.

But what effect?

I use Goal Boards frequently, for both short-term and long-term goals. The imagery is there to create a powerful ‘hook’ that my memory can latch onto. The effect of this is that knowingly, and unknowingly, its going to create motivation, urgency and guide my decision-making towards my goals. It’s not magic – it’s a psychological process of some sort that I don’t pretend to understand, I just know it works. It activates something called the Reticular Activating System (RAS) – that’s as much as I can tell you. But when we use our Goal Boards, we will carry around our chosen imagery in the front of our minds (OK, technically, the RAS is at the bottom of our brains) as a constant and powerful reminder to focus on something desirable.

Do Goal Boards really work?

They don’t work for everybody. A Goal Board won’t necessarily work for you. But this will be down to you – nobody else! A Goal Board will only work for you if you want it to, believe it will, and make use of it.

Below is a TED Talk video of a young entrepreneur, Carrie Green (featured image of this post) started her first online business at the age of 20, whilst studying Law at the University of Birmingham, taking the business global. Carrie launched Female Entrepreneur Association as a way to help inspire and connect female entrepreneurs from around the world. The network has grown to over 140,000 women worldwide. Carrie used a Goal Board to help her achieve her goals.
