Is Teaching The Career For Me?

When you come out of university, it can be hard to know what career to pursue. There are so many options out there, and it seems like you have to make one decision that will affect the rest of your life. But before you pick, why not consider teaching? As this can be an interesting and challenging career. Read on to find out more.

Positive

One of the main reasons for going into teach is that is such a varied and exciting career. There is never a dull day when working with kids is concerned, and there will always be behaviour to challenge you and the odd joke to make you laugh.

In fact, when teaching no two days are exactly the same, and no two hours are the same either. There is always so much to get done, and so many people that need your time and assistance. Meaning it’s unlikely that you will ever get too bored.

Negative

Of course, just like any career, you pick teaching isn’t always a bed of roses. It can be high stress, both from the expectations that you put yourself and the pressures that others put on you. In particular, you have the day to day pressure of dealing with the behaviour of your students which isn’t always as you would like.

Obviously, the standard of this varies widely from school to school. But do realise that if you are in an institution with established behaviour problems, it can be incredibly challenging just to get to the point of being able to teach.

Positive

Employability is an additional positive to consider when you enter the teaching profession. Every town, village, and city has schools. Also, if you teach in key subjects such as English, Maths, and Science your chance of always being able to find a post is even higher.

You also have the added benefit of being able to apply for jobs through agencies like Simply Education. As they can help place you in permanent position, as well as providing supply work opportunities if nothing in your field comes up on the permanent side.

Of course, it’s not like you can just walk into a permanent position. As you will need to go through a quite rigorous interview process that usually entails a demonstration of your teaching skill and style. As well as a discussion as to why you are applying for the job.

Negative

One thing that not everyone realises when you get into teaching is it can be a bit of a thankless task sometimes. This is because when the students excel, it is attributed by everyone apart from other teachers as their own efforts. But when they fail, most of the blame is put at their teacher’s door.

This can be tough to deal with, and it’s best to be prepared for this before considering teaching as your future career.

Positive

Lastly, another positive about entering the teaching profession is the creativity associated with it.

You have to be a creative thinker exploring and making resources in ways that will grab the students attention, help them to understand what they are studying, and also break it down for them at a suitable level.
